Anyone who would like to improve their emotional and psychological well-being can benefit from therapy, including;
- individual adults, adolescents, children or older people;
- couples, families and groups.
As a counselling psychologist I work therapeutically with clients with a variety of problems, difficulties and life issues. These may include: relationship breakdown; postnatal depression; anger; stress; bereavement and loss; the effects of childhood abuse; domestic violence; trauma and/or symptoms of psychological disorder such as anxiety and depression, eating disorders, or post-traumatic stress disorder. I offer an active collaborative relationship that can both facilitate the exploration of underlying issues and can empower people to confront change.
Therapeutic approaches
As a counselling psychologist I am trained to use several therapeutic approaches including psychodynamic therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and humanistic approaches. This allows me to formulate clients’ difficulties from a variety of perspectives and offer therapeutic interventions based on individual needs and clinical evidence.
Psychodynamic Therapy
Psychodynamic therapy is based on the theories and techniques of psychoanalysis. It attributes emotional problems to the individual's unconscious motives, feelings and conflicts related to early relationships and experiences in life, and how they repeat and create problems in current relationships.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
Mood and behaviour is determined by the beliefs that an individual holds about themselves, others, and the world. CBT aims to identify inaccurate beliefs that cause distress, and help people modify their thinking and behaviour. It is a structured approach including the agreement of goals for treatment and things to try out between sessions.
Person Centred Therapy
This form of humanistic therapy is also known as client-centred therapy. It is a non-directive approach thatis used to help a person achieve personal growth and come to terms with a specific event or problem that they are experiencing. The therapist encourages the individual to express their feelings and helps them to explore and understand them.
What happens?
Initially we would meet for a free consultation so that I could find out why you would like to attend. I would then let you know what I can offer and you can decide if it feels right for you. Each session lasts for 50 minutes and is confidential. The number of sessions varies according to you and your needs, and will be decided upon together. Sessions are typically weekly but can be timed to suit your circumstances.
Fees
The first consultation is free of charge and is an opportunity for you to decide if this is the right service for you. Thereafter, fees are typically £50 per session. Fees based on a 'sliding' scale are available in certain circumstances and are negotiated on an individual basis.
A charge will be incurred for a missed session however no charge will be made for a session cancelled with more than 24 hours' notice.
Please feel free to contact me for further information regarding therapy or appointments.
